York [England], July 12. This day will be run for at Croft,
in the North-Riding of this county, a purse of gold, by
asses, to carry catch weight, and to ride with pad and
halter; the best deserving ass to have the purse; the second
best deserving to have 2s. 6d the third thirteen-pence half-
penny; and the fourth a bundle of nettles.
None will be allowed to ride but taylors and chimney
sweepers, the former to use nothing but their yard-wands,
the latter their brushes. No ass to start above twenty
years old, or that ever won a prize, their ages to be
sufficiently certified for, to be subject to the articles
produced by the clerk of the race.
The taylor-rides are to have caps of cabbag'd remnants,
the chimney-sweepers caps to be adorned each with a plumage
of white feathers, and each ass to be led by its rider from
one end of the town of Croft to the other, preceded by a
taylor, who carries a pair of colours made up of the
remnants of the neighbouring parishes; the drummer advances
next, then two famous musicians; and for a further
encouragement, a repast of thistles, and other salutary
herbs, will be provided for the asses between each heat. If
any disputes arise, to be determined by the clerk of the
race.
