We have advice from Rome, that the Pope, desiring to
suppress every-thing that might tend to profane the holy
year, has sent circular letters to the governors of the
cities in the Ecclesiastical territories, forbiding them to
permit any opera, comedy, or other theatrical piece, to be
represented during the Carnival. As these are some of the
principle entertainments of the noblesse, several cities
have made representations upon this subject, intreating the
Pope at least to permit the exhibition of spiritual pieces;
but his Holiness persists in an absolute prohibition. . .
