March 12. The Bishop of London, in his letter this day
addressed to the clergy and inhabitants of the city of
London, takes notice, that it is every man's duty to give
attention to all the warnings which God in his mercy affords
to a sinful people: Such warnings we have had by two great
shocks of an earthquake. . . [6 lines]
His Lordship to reinforce the serious consideration of
this warning, takes notice of the general corruption of the
times: 'While I was writing this, says he, I cast my eye
upon the news-paper of the day, and counted no less than
fifteen advertisements for plays, opera's, musick and
dancing, for meetings at gardens, for cock-fighting, prize
fighting, &c. Should this paper go abroad, what an idea
must it give to the churches there, of the manner in which
Lent is kept in this protestant country? . . .
