14-21 Oct 1734:42 (469)
At a Supreme Court of Indicature, held for the Province of
New-York, at the City of New-York, Octob. 19, 1734. Present
The honourable James DeLancey, Esq; Chief Justice, The
honourable Fredrick Philippe, Esq; second Justice.
The Grand Jury having yesterday presented two scandalous and
seditious songs or ballads, lately dispersed about this
city, one entit. "A Song made upon the Election of the new
Magistrates for this City;" the other entit. "A Song made
on the foregoing Occasion," both highly defaming the
present Administration of his Majesty's Government in this
Province, tending greatly to inflame the minds of his
Majesty's good subjects, and to disturb & destroy that peace
& tranquility which ought to subsist & be maintained in this
Colony, and all other well govern'd Communities; Of which
'Virulent, Scandalous and Seditious Songs or Ballads,' they
have not been able, on a strict enquiry, to discover either
the author, printer or publisher. It is therefore ordered
by the Court, that the said 'Virulent, Scandalous &
Seditious Songs or Ballads' be burnt before the City-Hall,
fitting the Court, by the hands of the common Hang-man or
Whipper, on Monday the 21th of this Instant, at 12 o'clock,
and that the High-Sheriff of this City and County do take
Order accordingly. Per Cur' J. Hughes, Cl. in Cur'.
