London. Gloucester, April 7. When the inhabitants of
Ledbury received the news relative to the Cyder-Act, they
demonstrated their joy by the ringing of bells, and firing
of guns from the battlements of the Tower, which continued
incessantly for the day, whilst a barrel of cyder was
carried round the town, on the heads of which were written
in capitals this inscription, CYDER TAX FREE. The barrel was
decorated with laurels, and gilded apples, as were the hats
of the people who followed them, particularly those who
attended with drums, fifes, violins, and other instruments,
forming a grand band of music.
