London, July 19. Extract of a letter from the Isle of
Guernsey, July 19, 1766.
Yesterday morning, between twelve and one, his Royal
Highness the Duke of Gloucester landed in the this island.
It is hard to express the universal joy it spread over all
the island: The bells of all the churches were set a
ringing; a gun battery was erected from which several royal
salutes were fired;

At night there was a ball, which was very splendid, and
carried on with great decorum; It was opened by His Royal
Highness and Mrs. Brabazon; His Royal Highness honoured it
with his presence till eleven o'clock. The town was
illuminated, and several hogsheads of claret were given to
the populace. His Royal Highness re-embarked at twelve.
