From the Daily Gazetteer, October 5.
TO THE FOOL. From my chamber in the Royal Oak Marshalsed
Prison.
The inclosed came wrapt about my breakfast, dinner and
supper, (which was a pennyworth of cheese) last Sunday; and
observing the subject matter to be in verse, I peep'd into
it; finding it an odd subject, and handled in a droll
manner, I have presented it to you, hoping you will give it
a place in your paper, which, I doubt not, will please many
of your constant readers.
UPON ONE MR DAY, AT THE SIGN OF THE HORSE SHOE, WHO LAID THE
KEY UNDER THE DOOR, AND OUT-RAN, OR RATHER RUN OUT HIS
LANDLORD.
Here night and day conspire a coz'ning flight,
For day (they say) is run away by night.
For day is past, why, landlord, where's your rent?
You might have seen the day was almost spent.
