On the Power of Musick. "Palma, a celebrated musician at
Naples, was one day surprized in his house by a ruthless
creditor, bent on arresting him. The artist, without making
any answer to his invectives and threats, ran to his
harpsichord, and fell a playing an ariette, then a second,
and a third. The first sounds fixed the creditor's
attention, and, by the delicate touches of that masterly
hand, every rugged passion was allayed, and such tenderness
overflowed his heart, that he not only remitted Palma the
debt, but made him a present of ten pieces of gold, and
begged that a cordial intimacy might ever subsist between
them."
