Kingston, (In Jamaica,) November 22.
An attempt having been made to infringe the liberties of the
inhabitants of this town, two effigies, said to be very
great likenesses, were, on Saturday night last, put into a
cart . . . [8 lines] After being conveyed thro' the town,
they were brought to the court house, from whence the
procession began with a pace; the cart was illuminated by a
great number of candles and flambeaux, attended by mourners,
two muffled drums, and a bell, to the parade where a gallows
and pillory were previously erected. Being arrived at the
place of execution, the man of the gown was tucked up, and
the following lable appeared on his breast.
I'll burn, or hang, which ever you think right,
No pity ask:--I see eternal night--
My last efforts my tacit rancour tell:
My latter crimes by far my past excel,
And living on would be too bad for hell.
. . . [16 more lines, end of demonstration]
