The Mirror. (Numb. XIII.) The attention of the public
having been lately much engaged by several pieces for and
against the play-house, the Mirror would not have added to
the number, did not the manner in which the following letter
treats the subject, recommend it to a place in every publick
paper. & . . .
I observe you have undertaken in a weekly paper to reprove
the vice and expose the follies of mankind, and therefore
suppose you will, though [ ] I am, not be unwilling to
receive an intelligence that may furnish you with materials
for executing this wholesome design. . . . [1 1/2 columns
follow, ending with] I really think in my conscience, that
the rich people who encourage and support the play-house
will have much to answer for: Nor do I think that industry
and oeconomy will ever thrive among us, as long as this
cursed engine of pleasure, idleness, and extravagance
remains. . . . [signed] A Tradesman.
