[From the London Chronicle of October 10, 1771. A letter
addressed to the Right Hon. the Earl of Sandwich.] I now
address myself to you, as First Lord of the Admiralty, on
the subject of the fire at Portsmouth dock-yard. . .
[complains about the way pursuit of a perpetrator was
handled. One Dudley with 2 men] visited the Commissioner,
and remained much longer than was necessary at a public
house, where the prisoner was left at liberty to make use of
his discretion. The result of their journey amounts to as
much as the enquiries of Scrub in the Beau Stratagem. . .
