ON THE RETURN OF SPRING.
When the rough winter in his rigors rises,
Sleet-ice and hail-storms, with the reinless fury
Of the mad whirlwinds, through the vast of heaven,
Riding in uproar.
. . . [3 more verses]
How the wing'd songsters, linnets, larks and thrushes,
Hail the soft season in delighted chorus,
While in the thicket sweetest Philomela
Warbles her ditties!
Oft the lone pilgrim to her musick listens,
While the sun blazes in the heights of heaven;
Oft, too, the chantress to the ear of midnight
Trills o'er her raptures.
. . . [2 more verses]
O the rich raptures! O the songs of triumph!
. . . [5 more lines]
O for our seats there, while our loud Hosannas
Join in the chorus!
. . . [2 final verses]
