Extract of a letter from an officer in the New York
Provincial Forces, dated at the Camp before St. John's, the
11th October, 1775.
The siege against St. John's, has now continued above three
weeks. The Canadians under the command of the indefatigable
Colonel Livingston, undertook to occupy a piece of ground on
the eastern side of the lake, and sent to our General for
assistance, when the brave Major Zedwitz was sent to take
the command.--With only 12 of our men, and 21 Canadians, he
nobly defended himself against 44 Regulars, who attempted to
land under the cover of the guns on board their vessels on
the lake--An officer of the Regulars he killed with his own
hand with a rifle. Several other Regulars were wounded or
killed, without any loss on our side. . .
