Camp on Beeman's Heights, September 17, 1777. . . [First
paragraph of the letter about General Burgoyne's suspected
plans, then:] Yesterday afternoon, the Commissioners
presented the war belt to the Indians, who this afternoon
returned an answer to the speech, declaring their acceptance
of it. They then as usual upon such occasions, had their
war dance, blackened the Commissioners, Continental
officers, and many inhabitants, and are now partaking of
their feast, which is soop and part of a roasted ox. . . [7
