Chatham, June 29. "The 23d of last April, Capt. Davis,
Lieut. Jones and a corporal and four privates, were killed
and scalped by a party of about 20 Indians, on the Easton
path, four miles from this place; they belonged to a strong
party that were marching thro' and Davis and Jones
imprudently leaving the party in quest of deer, were shot
down. . . [5 more lines] Col. Proctor's band of musick
playing a dead march as we past the place, in honour to the
memory of those brave and unfortunate men."
