We should avoid, as much as possible, the allurement to
vice. As the play-house here is soon to be opened, I cannot
help being sensibly affected with an apprehension of the
mischievous consequences that may arise from it to this
city. Many others, as well as myself, I believe, view it
with the same disagreeable emotions, and sad forebodings of
future evil. As to my own part, I declare that nothing
less than such a persuasion, would have made me think of
discouraging an entertainment that most people are fond of.
For was this a pleasure innocent in its nature, and were
there no ill effects resulting from it, I should not indulge
a secret wish, that any of my fellow citizens would deny
themselves the gratification of such an amusement. . . [8
