[London] Yesterday a mortifying fray happened between Dr.
Goldsmith, the author of the new comedy called, She stoops
to conquer, and Mr. Evans, the publisher of the London
Packet of the 25th. The Doctor, it seems, thought himself
injured by some passage in the Packet, and calling upon the
publisher to resent the insult, took an opportunity, while
Evans was looking over the paper in question, to lay his
cane over the bookseller's shoulders. The compliment was
immediately returned by the Welchman, and a bloody battle
ensued, in which the Doctor received two black eyes, and was
otherwise much bruised. When the engagement was over, Mr.
Evans called a constable, and insisted that the Doctor
should be carried to the Compter, but a brother author who
was present interposing, led Dr. Goldsmith to a coach, and
thus ended the fray.
