24 Jun 1776:31 (1289)
At a court of enquiry, held at the house of Mrs. Montagnie,
on the 18th day of June, 1776, to examine into the conduct
of Capt. Copp, upon complaint of Lieutenant Colonel Zedwitz,
for assaulting and striking him. . . [members present
listed; 1st meeting adjourned to following day.] The court
met according to the adjournment at 10 o'clock on the 19th.
Present, the same members as yesterday. The court
unanimously agreed (upon hearing the parties and witnesses)
that Capt. Copp was not guilty of assaulting Col. Zedwitz;
and the parties have agreed to compromise the matter. It
appeared in the course of the examination of the dispute
between Col. Zedwitz and Capt. Copp, that insinuations of
cowardice had been thrown out by Col. Zedwitz against Capt.
Copp, relative to his conduct in the attempt of storming
Quebec, on the 31st of December last. The charge appears to
the court to be groundless, and to have originated from a
mistake of Col. Zedwitz, for which he has express'd his
sorrow to Capt. Copp, in the presence of the court, and
which is satisfactory to Capt. Copp. [Signed] John Nixon,
President.
