I find the ladies head-dress is a nole me tangere. It is a
matter not to be meddled with. Neither satire from the
press nor the stage can possibly lower its dimensions. Mr.
Garrick tried his utmost in his Sir John Brute, but in vain,
to make the ladies ashamed of their heads, and Mr. Foote has
further endeavoured, in Lady Pentweazle's Foretop, to carry
ridicule still farther, but to no purpose, not a single
carrot, feather, turnep, ribbon, or any other ornament can
be spared from these formidable structures. . . [20 more
