[an extract from a letter of a Jersey merchant, dated
Jersey, January 7.] "The French landed about two in the
morning on Saturday the 6th instant, at a place called Banc
du Violet, about four miles from town. . . [paragraph 2,
col.2] "Of the enemy's five companies which were engaged and
defeated, 2 captains, 1 lieutenant, 5 serjeants, 4
corporals, 2 drummers, and 48 privates killed. All there-
remaining officers, commissioned and non-commissioned, and
about 238 privates, laid down their arms, and surrendered
