A pastoral elegy, on the death of a virtuous young lady.
ALEXIS.
Damon thy look presages me no good.
For in thine aspect fate is understood.
Alas, what torments seize my aching breast
At once by fear and friendly hope possest?
. . . [8 lines]
Angels attend her through th'aetherical sphere,
May her protector be their only care;
Harmonious sounds let every cherub sing,
And seraphim's support her on their wing.
Whilst sad Allexis in some desert cell,
To mournful echo his afflictions tell.
