Index Entry Lyric, topical [beg] Since no adven'trous muse
Location New York
Citation
NYWJ.742.064
20 Dec 1742:11 (474)
To his Excellency, James Oglethorpe, Esq; General and
Commander in Chief of all his Majesty's forces in South-
Carolina & Georgia. On his success in having defeated the
Spaniards in their attack upon Georgia, whose naval force
consisted of 36 sail of vessels and 5000 men with little
more than so many hundred disciplin'd forces; occasion'd by
a malicious misrepresentation of that glorious action.
Since no adven'trous muse her voice will raise
To sing the patriots worth & hero's praise,
  And Oglethorpe's distinguish'd merits blaze,
Rise, Muse! since envy darts her hissing tongue
  And cank'rous malice barks in merits wrong;
And check no more the low, yet generous lay
But with glad pride thy righteous wrath obey.
  . . . [76 lines]
The bays of her campaign the muse now brings,
Kindly accept what she ambitious sings.
  . . . [11 more lines, signed] Philanthropos.
