An Address of the Grand Jury, for the County of Cecil, in
the province of Maryland, to the author of a Series of
Letters, signed, A Farmer.
Respected Sir,
When the stamp-act's repeal past over the deep,
So pleased were we all, that we fell fast asleep,
And on had we slept, still dreaming no harm,
Had not you Sir, aroused us, and sounded th'alarm;
You told us, alas!--who good watch would not keep?
'That slavery's always preceded by sleep.';
Your praise to resound whilst all things prepare,
The fishes of Schuylkill, and fowls of the air,
While some make you a Prince, some raise to a God,
Some give you a sceptre, some give you a rod,
Some give you a box, and a right at your ease
To get drunk at St. David's whenever you please.
Dread sir, our oblation accept, tho' but small,
It is but a mite, yet the poor widow's all.
The warmth of affection, not value you'll prize,
Our hearts o'erflow till it streams from our eyes.
To worth so exalted, what mortal is blind?
America's saviour, and light of mankind!
[signed] H. S. Foreman.
