From the London Chronicle. Sketch of the Character of the
King of Denmark.
Christian, the present King of Denmark, who has done us the
honour of a visit, was born the 29th of January 1749 . . .
[11 lines]
The King's person, though seeming delicate and slender,
is yet extremely active, and capable of sustaining fatigue
to a surprizing degree. In walking, (of which he is
extremely fond), he has frequently tired many of his
attendants; and in dancing he seems indefatigable. It is
happy for mankind, that such peaceful exercises as these are
the amusements of modern heroes; and that such spirits and
such activity, which formerly deluged whole countries with
blood, are now dissipated in the mazes of a ball, or the
progress of a harmless excursion. When an absolute Monarch,
instead of carrying terror at the head of an army, is
content to cultivate the more innocent pleasures of peace,
his subjects have cause to bless, and the rest of mankind
have reason to love him. . .
