Philadelphia, June 19, 1770. Deserted from his Majesty's
18th or Royal Regiment of Foot of Ireland, and from Major
Isaac Hamilton's company, at Philadelphia.
John Kelly, born in the north of Ireland, 22 years of
age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, a labourer, hath black
hair, black eyes, darkish complexion; went off in his
regimentals, with the buttons marked 18, the No. of the
Regiment. He deserted said regiment once before, and was
brought prisoner from Carlisle gaol, where he was confined
by some of the inhabitants, by the name of Cook, which he
passed by in that part of the country, and he has been tried
by a general court martial for desertion. He is apt to sing
much in company, has a strong voice, but much of the brogue
on his tongue, and is an idle, drunken and worthless fellow;
he robbed one of his comrades of near nine pounds currency
the day before he deserted . . . [reward, forty shillings]
