Index Entry Cato [t], to be performed in Philadelphia by students of Rathell's school

1-8 Apr 1771:432 (211 [=221])
To the Public, and more particularly the parents and
guardians of youth committed to his tuition, Joseph Rathell
presents his respects, hoping they will excuse the
disappointment they met with on Thursday night last, which
was entirely owing to their partiality in his favour; for
had he the vanity to expect so numerous an auditory to his
pupil's exhibition, he would doubtless have prepared a more
capacious place than his school room for their reception.
This unlucky circumstance rendered his original intention
abortive, which simply was to revive a custom often
recommended by the most eminent writers on education, to
introduce youth to the world by an early acquaintance with
the faces of men and a modest boldness in delivering adopted
thoughts in our native language. --To remedy the late
inconveniency, Mr. Rathell has (at the particular request of
several ladies and gentlemen) engaged the Assembly Room, for
Tuesday the 16th instant, precisely at 7 o'clock in the
evening, when some of his pupils will give a specimen of
their proficiency in declamation, by rehearsing the Tragedy
of Cato, and other pieces selected from the most elegant
writers in our language--by way of interlude, some favourite
pieces of music will be introduced.
Tickets for admission, at half-a-crown each, to be had at
William Goddard's Printing Office, in Arch street, of
Archibald M'Elroy, at the American China Ware-house, in
Second-street, at the late Union-Library, in Third-street,
of William Woodhouse, Stationer, in Front-street, of the
waiter of the London Coffee-house, and of Mr. Rathell, at
his house in Gray-s Alley.
This small sum he is advised to rate them at, merely to
defray his expence--For profit he depends on the approbation
his exhibition shall meet with from the candour of those who
favour it with their presence. April 6, 1771.
