Yesterday a mortifying fray happened between Dr., Goldsmith,
the author of the new comedy, called She Stoops to Conquer,
and Mr. Evans, the publisher of the London Packet of the
24th The Doctor, it seems, thought himself injured by some
passages in the Packet, and calling upon the publisher to
resent the insult, took the opportunity, while Evans was
looking for the paper in question, to lay his cane over the
bookseller's shoulder. The compliment was immediately
returned by the Welchman, and a bloody battle ensued, in
which the Doctor received two black eyes, and was otherwise
very much bruised. . . [6 lines, constable called, Goldsmith
led away.]
