New-York, August 2. The following prologue, by a gentleman
of King's College, to the Tragedy of George Barnwell, acted
last Monday for the benefit of the Hospital, having been
much applauded by a very numerous and polite audience, who
attended the performance, cannot fail of giving pleasure to
many readers of sensibility, who had not an opportunity of
hearing it delivered from the stage. The audience take this
opportunity of returning their sincere thanks to the
ingenious author, for the readiness with which he undertook
the composition, upon very short warning; and to Mr. Hallam,
whose graceful and animated delivery of it, did ample
justice to the poet.
  The public ought to be informed that almost all the
comedians, and attendants upon the theatre, very generously
gave up their perquisites upon that occasion; by which means
a very liberal gratuity is added to the fund of this
benevolent institution.
  With melting breast the wretche's pang to feel,
  His cares to soften, or his anguish hear;
  Woe into peace by pity to beguile,
  And make disease, and want, and sorrow smile,
  Are deed which nobly mark the gen'rous mind,
  That swells with lib'ral love to human kind;
