Extract of a letter from on board the ship Castel of
Bristol, Capt. Montgomery, dated at Old Malabar, Mar. 10,
1749.
We are just now firing half minute guns for the death of
Amboe King of Calabar. Our captain is gone ashore to the
funeral, with our piper, fidler and drummer. The
inhabitants have this morning killed five of his wives and
slaves, who are all heartily willing to step into the other
world with him: . . . [2 lines] All the women in the towns
along the river, to the number of 700, are running about the
place of his interment, uttering strange and hideous cries,
while all sorts of musick is playing. . .
