A Gentle Hint to a Few Gentlemen-Rakes, Occasionally written
by a Sufferer, August 28th, 1743.
'Tis strange how things, that simply disagree,
Should, by compounding, make up harmony;
To please the palate, sour and sweet must join,
And, for the feeling, smooth and rough combine;
Some single sounds we can't with pleasure hear,
Which, mingled with nice art, delight the ear:
All this is musical, but stranger yet,
Are contrarities that ne'er can fit.
