On the 4th these generals dined with Count Maurice of
Nassau. The Prince de Chima, Governor of Oudenarde, having
received orders to put French Flanders under contribution,
he has demanded a million of rations of forage. On the 5th
there arrived at Oudenarde a French officer and a trumpet,
with an answer to this demand, which was, that as it was
unusual to exact contribution in a country, except an army
was at hand to support such exactions, the people in French
Flanders did not think themselves obliged to comply with
this demand, as hitherto none of the enemy's troops had
appeared upon the territories of the King. . .
