An Essay on Friendship.
  The choice of those with whom we are to be intimate, is a
most necessary caution, so few are truly worthy. . . [44

principles of virtue.  It was a saying of Cicero, and Mr.
Addison, in his excellent tragedy of Cato, hath given the
same thought to Portius:  That a candid correction, where we
see an error in the conduct or opinion of our acquaintance,
