The following addresses are inserted in this paper by desire
of the Synod. To the Honourable William Denny . . . [5
lines] May it please your honour,
With the greatest concern for the interests of virtue and
religion, we beg leave to inform your honour, that we
understand there is a proposal of erecting a house within
this city of suburbs, peculiarly designed for exhibiting
plays.
That we cannot but believe, in the common method they are
conducted, they prove a most powerful engine of debauching
the minds, and corrupting the manners of youth, by
encouraging idleness, extravagance, and immorality, which
are of most fatal consequences to the public weal . . . [18
more lines, signed] Richard Treat, moderator.
. . . [a second address from the synod of New-York and
Philadelphia]
Mr. Speaker, and Gentlemen of the Assembly,
It gives us great uneasiness, to hear that materials are
preparing to build a house for plays (or operas) in the
liberties of this city, when we consider the tendency of
these diversions of the stage to corrupt all that attend
them . . . [3/4 column in this vein.]
