Portsmouth, Nov. 17. [arrival of corpse of General Wolfe,
put into a hearse sent from London.] In the march the corps
of Artillery preceded the hearse, and the Regiment of
Invalids followed it, with colours, pikes and muskets
reversed, the drums and fifes beating and playing a very
solemn march, and the church bells, the clappers of which
were muzzled with leather, ringing a melancholy peal. In
this manner it was conducted through the town to the
Landport gate. . .
