Philadelphia, July 21, 1768. To Messeurs Hall and Sellers.
Gentlemen, The readiness with which you oblige your
friends,encourages me to hope that, if the following poem (
a hasty sacrifice to friendship) shall be found to contain
nothing but what is purely innocent, it may have a chance of
appearing to advantage in your useful paper.
An Epistle to Damon
In vain you ask your friend to sing,
In vain to wake the sleeping string;
The muse long since hath bid farewell
To Stephon, and his lonely cell.
