London. Extract of a letter from a person at Ramsgate in
Kent, to his friend in London, Jan. 30, 1749. . . . Feb. 6.
Last Saturday was discharged at the tower, out of the first
regiment of foot-guards, by Col. Gumly, so many men out of
each company, as reduced them to 48 private men, 2
sergeants, 3 corporals, and two drummers, in each company;
and each man received yesterday 4 s. for his sword and belt,
and 8 s. to carry him home. During the war each company in
that regiment contained 100 men.
