Extract of a letter from Bristol, November 13. Tuesday
about three o'clock in the afternoon . . . funeral of his
late majesty at the respective places appointed for them.
At six o'clock St. Pauls' great bell began tolling once
every minute, which was followed in the same manner by all
the bells in every parish in London, which continued till
eleven o'clock at night. . . .
The whole had entered the Abby about nine o'clock, where
the anthem and funeral ceremony was performed, which took up
three quarters of an hour, when they returned nearly in the
same order they went.
The drums were all muffled up with crape, and the drummers
ranged along the scaffolding, beating a dead march during
the procession; the houshold trumpeters and fifes walked in
mourning, with black jocky caps.
