THE FLIGHT OF THE MUSES.
I.
While nature reclin'd on the bosom of May,
And Luna's soft beams rekindl'd the day,
The muses came trooping to Avon's smooth stream,
Where wrapt in sweet fancies their Shakespear would dream,

II.
There oft would they keep their May-vigils unseen,
And frolic the night and dance light on the green:
But now the gay dance they quickly gave o'er,
And music and pastime prevailed no more.

IV.
Her beauties, new-born, will sing in soft strains
The streamlet, the grove, and the pastoral plains,
Bid Del'ware roll onward majestic in song;
And Schuylkill, like Avon, glide sweetly along,
Then call the young lover to unite in the chorus,
And chaunt the smooth flow of the much lov'd Codorus.

But when we would fill the loud trumpet of fame,
We'll strengthen the song with her Washington's name.

We'll sing her brave soldier and citizen join'd
