Extract of a letter from Paris. His majesty wrote the
following letter to our archbishop, after the surrender of
Earl Cornwallis. Cousin, The success of my arms will never
prove flattering to me, but in as much as they may tend to
restore peace . . . I therefore send you this letter to
signify my intention that you will cause Te Deum to be sung
in the metropolitan church of my good city of Paris, on such
a day and hour as shall be told you from me by the grand
master of the ceremonies. . . . [signed] Louis.
