Extract of a letter from Warrington, February 17. Last
night Col. Tarleton, (in his way to Liverpool) stopped at
the Red Lion Inn, the exchange horses, it was soon made
public by the ringing of bells, the house was illuminated
and at least one thousand sail-cloth weavers assembled . . .
At parting he was very polite, said, "Don't be afraid of
taking hold of my hand, though I have lost two fingers, I
can use my pen, and will my sword, when I can be of use to
my country." At nine last night he got to Liverpool, where
the bells were rung all night, and this morning till church
service.
