16 Jul 1783:11, 12 (1608)
Baltimore, (Maryland) July 4. By some delay or mistake in
the water conveyance, the following did not come to our
hands till two days ago, viz.
Chester, in the state of Maryland, May 16, 1783.
On Wednesday last, the 14th instant, was held the first
commencement in Washington College, for degrees in the arts
and sciences; which presented a scene not only new and

Brothers, notwithstanding the difficulty of the composition,
was acted with the great applause before a vastly crouded

during the last year of their education, concluded their
scholastic labours in this way, by shining the characters of

The day following (viz. on Thursday, May 15th) . . . The
performances being too long, perhaps, to insert at large, we
give a few lines from the beginning and conclusion.-------
When Athens flourished with the Grecian reign,
And chiefs and heros liv'd--a Godlike train!
When by her arms each neighbouring state was sway'd,
And Kings an homage to her warriors paid
