The Pennsylvania Spy. No. 1. By Palinurus Peeper, Esq;
[Commentary on the character and conduct of people in the
province. The Spy plans to discuss the following
organizations: The Philosophical Society, Library Company of
Philadelphia, Meetings of the Worshipful Mayor, Aldermen and
Common Council, Hospital and House of Employment,
Legislative Body, Cabinet Council, Colleges and Academies in
the city, Coffee-House and New Tavern]
I have always been an advocate for innocent amusements, so
far as they do not tent to introduce luxury and too much
dissipation. I shall, therefore, peep once a month into the
Assembly-Room, in Lodge-Alley, and scatter a few hints in
the course of my speculations, for the benefit of my fair
country-women, whose modesty and good sense, will, I am
confident, secure them a favourable reception.
The Theatre is but a wooden building, and probably will not
last long. But as I have no objection to a good play, if
well performed, whenever the travelling gentry are permitted
to pay us another visit, I shall make my appearance in the
center of the pit, and in some future paper give my candid
opinion of the performers, and enquire how far their
occupation and abilities may tend to edify the good people
of Philadelphia.
[Attends meetings of a club of Literati, which meets every
Thursday evening at the Golden Fleece]
