George James L'Argeau, Master of Musick, Fencing and
Dancing.
Head of Bohemia, Cecil County, Maryland.
To Mr. L'Argeau,
Passing some time ago through Dorset county, I was agreeably
surprized with your name, character and employment. As a
gentleman of your profession is much wanting in my
neighbourhood, I embraced the opportunity of writing to you
by a young lady; but not since hearing from you, am inclined
to believe the lady was too fond of the amusement to part
with you, which certainly would have been the case, had she
delivered the letter agreeable to promise. Since that time
I have been soliciting several gentlemen of my acquaintance
in your behalf, and I can with pleasure assure you that had
my wishes been superlatively extravagant, they are indulged.
In short, Sir, the pleasure I have taken in serving you
entitles me to the honour of welcoming you to my house: but
should prior arrangements debar me of the pleasure, a line
lodged at the late Philemon Nobles, in Warwick, will come
safe to hand. And as a further inducement to your obliging
me, I will ensure seven hundred pounds a quarter, besides
many other perquisites too numerous to mention, and the
liberty of my house as your own. I am, Sir, your humble
servant,
[signed] John Leach Knight.
