July 31, 1778. Extract of a letter from a gentleman in
Boston, Nov 12.
[Letter discusses the evils of a national debt and
governmental fraud]
Take warning from Great-Britain. No stock-jobbing,
ministerial alley-gaming, cheating, and a thousand frauds.
Every good citizen should use his influence against stage
entertainments. Where there are theatres, there will be
Drury-Lanes and Covent-Gardens. The late Josiah Quincy,
Esq; after spending an evening at the theatre in Covent-
Garden, has left us the following testimony against plays in
his journal: "I am satisfied in my opinion that the stage is
the nursery of vice-- that it disseminates its seeds far and
wide with an amazing and baneful success."
