A Letter from Colonel Williams, D.A.G. of the Southern Army,
to his friend, a Gentleman in Philadelphia.
Camp, High Hills of Santee, 10th October, 1781. . . .
[Several paragraphs describing action by General Greene's
troops near Camden, in April, 1781] Notwithstanding the
precaution of calling the rolls often, one Jones, a Drummer,
eluded the attention of the officers, and the vigilance of
the guards, and got safe into town; but nothing was to be
apprehended from this circumstance, as our army was well
posted and desired nothing more than a field action.
. . . [Several paragraphs on action]
