London. Anecdote of Messrs. Garrick and Whitfield.
When Mr. Whitfield was building his Tabernacle in Tottenham
Court-Road, he employed the same carpenter as worked for Mr.
Garrick, at Drury-Lane Theatre. The reverend gentleman was
at that time rather short of cash, and the carpenter had
remained unpaid for some weeks. Being one day in
conversation with Mr. Garrick, he intreated the manager to
advance him a little money, as he had been greatly
disappointed by Mr. Whitfield. Garrick assisted the
tradesman, and immediately waited upon the reverend
gentleman, when after being introduced, he apologized for
his visit, and intimated to him what his carpenter had
insinuated, at the same time he offered Mr. Whitfield a
500l. bank note, which was politely accepted, and by that
means the Temple of Fanaticism was raised by the Monarch of
the Boards.
