AN ODE.
By various means the tuneful choir
Attempt to reach immortal fame;
Some tune the pipe; some strike the lyre;
Some vice and folly boldly blame.
. . . [7 verses, with musical references, such as: "Clio
sings", "lyric muse", "rural muse", "Lesbian lyre",
"Shakespeare's muse"]
If e'er I touch the Doric reed,
Or ever tune the rural song,
O let my humble verses lead
From what the good condemn as wrong.
. . . [1 verse]
In every note, in ev'ry line,
Each serious Ode, or merry tale,
Let some instructive moral shine:
Let virtue over vice prevail.
