For the Royal Gazette. Messrs. Wells,
Some years ago a humour prevailed in England of taking a
line from one paragraph of a newspaper, and reading it with
a line taken from another, by means of which there was often
a ludicrous assemblage of ideas produced. This was called
Cross Reading. I have sent you an attempt of the same kind,
for the entertainment of your readers.
[signed] Y. Z.
Yesterday her Majesty was safely delivered of a young
Princess.
Positively the last time of performance this season.
To be sold, a likely young Negro wench.
Imported by a gentleman for his own private use.
. . . [40 lines follow, including the following]
Last night Lord North in a Committee of the whole House.
To conclude with surprising performances on the slack wire.
. .
The garrison subscription balls will commence.
In a large cypress canoe with a pink-stern. . .
Divine service will be performed in St. Paul's.
The whole to conclude with dancing and tumbling. . .
