Mr. Rivington, The Editor of the Chatham Paper has done
great injustice to our worthy Minister; and I am afraid, as
you are so ready to catch at every thing, that you will re-
publish in your Gazette, the hymn, said by Mr. Kollock, to
be written by Mr. Caldwell. The fact is the text is mis-
quoted, and the copy of the hymn not genuine. I went with
the other children of the Lord, on Sabbath after the enemy
had made their appearance, to return thanks for our safe
deliverance from their barbarous impiety. When our pious
and worthy minister preached to us from Galatians, Chap. 3,
ver. i & iv
Chap. 5, ver. vii. the words are "O foolish Galatians, who
hath bewitched you, that you should not obey the truth.
Have you suffered so many things in vain? If it be yet in
vain. Ye did run well, who did hinder you that ye did not
obey the truth?"
The Hymn, as follows, I wrote down from the mouth of the
clerk who gave out the line, and it was sung to the tune.
"O Mother dear Jerusalem"
Hymn.
Come let us run at once they cry,
From temple and the priest.
Or Buskirk sure will us destroy
Like pigeons in our nest.
Avenge thy injur'd name good Lord,
Protect thy children dear,
Who first were taught by holy word,
In arm'd array t'appear.
. . . [8 more lines]
If you had heard the sermon preached, and the Hymn sung by
that divine man, the Reverend Mr. Caldwell, I really think
it would have turned your heart, and made you, as I am,
A Friend to the Old Cause.
Elizabeth-Town,
Feb. 3, 1780.
[This is a response to the article from February 9, quoted
from the New-Jersey Journal at Chatham on February 2 about
the enemy entering a church.]
