 Sir,
Having been favoured with the following impromptu, written
by one of the first poets of the age, respect for the memory
of the amiable, but unfortunate Major Andre, induces me to
wish you will give it a place in your paper, which will
oblige. [signed] A Friend to real Merit.
  As Britain mourn'd with all a Mother's pain,
  Two sons, two gallant sons, ignobly slain.
  Mild Cooke, by savage fury robb'd of breath,
  And martial Andre, doom'd to baser death.
